An adaptation of Baśń o wężowym sercu albo wtóre słowo o Jakóbie Szeli, a Nike-awarded (2020) novel of Radek Rak. The young writer who had previously specialised in what could be broadly termed fantasy, expanded the field of his explorations, combining the poetry of the fairy tale with the realistic plane. Exploiting the gap in the life of Jakub Szela encompassing his childhood and youth, he decided to tell the story of a peasant revolt leader his own way, mythologising him further without identifying what could be true and what could be false. The artists at the Stary National Theatre treat Baśń o wężowym sercu / The Tale of a Serpent Heart as a pretext to ask the question about identity: the personal identity that triggers the internal transformation, the social that has our peasant and noble pedigrees mingled, and political that contains the class divisions, desire of vengeance, and resentment. And it all ends in the gory bloodbath of the nobility.
