The screening will be preceded by an introduction by Łukasz Maciejewski.
Divine Comedy invites you to the cinema.
The idea of a permanent film strand accompanying the theatrical programme of the Divine Comedy Festival has been evolving for several years in conversations with Bartosz Szydłowski. In 2025, it finally becomes reality.
Within this new section we want to present films whose form, experimental courage and artistic quality resonate with the festival’s core idea and this year’s leading theme.
This year: neo-barbaria — intentional cruelty, a violation of norms, but also an attempt to grasp reality through both collective and individual experience.
We will screen titles that already generate noise.
Debated, discussed, ambiguous.
On the opening day of the showcase, Krystian Lupa will present The Shelter – a film shot during the making of The Trial, his acclaimed 2017 Kafka-inspired production. A graduate of film directing studies at the Łódź Film School, Lupa returns to an early artistic passion. His film, confronting the political paralysis of a decade ago, becomes a kind of memento in the face of its renewed relevance.
The Handyman – a Polish-British project by Anka Sasnal and Wilhelm Sasnal, premiered at Rotterdam – is conceptual cinema tout court. This time the directors adapt a novel by Robert Walser. A bold and original work, featuring music by The Advisory Circle and The Smiths.
The showcase will close with an advance screening of Emi Buchwald’s No Ghosts On Good Street, one of the most acclaimed and awarded debuts of this year’s Gdynia Film Festival. A Munk Studio production, the film feels like a fully ripe fruit. Siblings as if taken from Bernhard. They sense each other through their differences. There is no casualness here; instead, erudition, literary depth — and even Leśmian’s Dusiołek.
I believe that with these screenings, Divine Comedy will become divine also in film.
Barbarically divine.
