Do we know how to distinguish the urge of revenge from the need for justice? And is forgiveness necessary for smooth operation of a political community? Or is it rather, to quote Wyspiański, that “we hate one another, and it’s not the worst of our evils”, for only “hatred can still produce something within us”?
These questions have no straightforward answers. However, unless they are reflected on, justice will only turn out to be revenge, fuelling a spiral of hatred stripped of forgiveness until it escalates into bare violence.
Discussing post-election reality, we will ask unpopular questions and explore unconventional perspectives. Our guide, besides Wyspiański, will be Shakespeare, and especially his Prospero from The Tempest.
