Ludowy Theatre in Kraków reveals a completely modern dimension and strength. Małgorzata Bogajewska reads “Uncle Vanya” as a story of eternal longing, fear and dread of the world. The characters talk, eat and drink away their fate it in a series of daring, unbelievably rhythmic scenes, and finally find themselves at the starting point, but without the old illusions, which makes them even closer to us.
It is a proof of how much is always provided by an insightful reading of a classic text, resignation from extemporaneousness and distrust of stage glitz, replaced by close work with the actors. Maja Pankiewicz, Piotr Pilitowski, Piotr Franasowicz and Kajetan Wolniewicz play great roles, but the entire cast of this production is worth all the money. And we in the audience are worth the emotion that “Uncle Vanya” from the Ludowy Theatre guarantees.
