The myth of the Smolensk Catastrophe, spectres of Romanticism, the echoes of Wyspiański and Gombrowicz, the poetry of Norwid, and the current skirmishes between the Polish tribes in a touching, bitter, and witty production by the long-term director of the Współczesny Theatre in Szczecin, one of the most important dramatists of the last decades. Where will we be taken on board of a Bygone Heroes Airlines, and how is the flight going to end? The scenario was based on Zenon Fajfer’s poem of the same title, believed unstageable until now. Odlot / Flight premiered on 13 December 2021, precisely 30 years from Anna Augustynowicz’s first production at the Współczesny. Thus, it provides a coda for her work, an opportunity for an artistic soul-searching, self-ironic coming to terms with own aesthetics and directing style. Paradoxically, the play is set deeply in the Kraków spirit, and has much in common with a nostalgia and the bitter wit of the Vault Under the Rams (Piwnica pod Baranami). None can hold a looking glass for the Polish reality to see itself in it like Anna Augustynowicz, recipient of the prestigious Swinarski Prize awarded by the “Teatr” Monthly.
